Your essential sleeping bag guide

If you’re feeling confused about your baby sleep time – don’t despair!  I’ve put together some helpful baby sleeping bag advice to help you.

Many parents feel that sleeping bags help their babies to sleep better. It’s important to keep babies at the perfect temperature all night long and using a baby sleeping bag means no more kicking off blankets!

So firstly,

What is a baby sleeping bag?

A sleeping bag is like a wearable blanket for your baby that is more convenient than traditional blankets or sheets.

Sleeping bags have neck and armholes and eliminates the need for any additional blankets, keeping baby at the right temperature whilst they sleep.

Baby Sleeping bag safety

Whilst your tot will have the freedom to move around, the neck and armholes need to be correctly sized to prevent baby from slipping in or wriggling out.

You must ensure your baby's head cannot pass through the neck opening while fastened.

A sleeping bag that fits properly is one of the safest types of bedding for your baby.

What should my baby wear under their sleeping bag?

What you dress your baby in depends on the tog of the sleeping bag you are using and the temperature of your nursery.

It’s important to keep in mind that all babies are different, and you will soon decipher what your baby is most comfortable in.

You should check your baby’s temperature by using a thermometer, or by feeling your baby’s chest or the back of their neck.

Generally, the warmer a room is, the less your baby needs to wear under their sleeping bag.

Signs a baby is too hot can include them…

  • Feeling hot or sweaty to touch on their tummy, neck or back
  • Having damp hair
  • Flushing in the cheeks
  • Increasing their breathing rate

To monitor their temperature, The Lullaby Trust suggests feeling “your baby’s chest or the back of their neck (your baby’s hands and feet will usually be cooler, which is normal). If your baby’s skin is hot or sweaty, remove one or more layers of bedclothes.”

What are the benefits of using a baby sleeping bag?

Sleeping bags are basically wearable blankets for babies that keep them comfortable and at a safe temperature as they sleep.

The other benefits of baby sleeping bags include…

They help baby to stay at a constant temperature.

  • Your baby can move around in the bag but still stay covered and cosy.
  • They're really handy for night feeds.
  • They mean that there's no need for additional covers that baby could kick off or get tangled up in.
  • They promote good sleep and become a recognisable part of your little one's bedtime routine.
  • They are great to use wherever you are, so are great for sleep on the go and also for travelling.

What tog should my baby wear?

Tog is a measure of warmth, rather than thickness. A product’s tog value is determined by a lab test.

Sleeping bag tog ratings generally range from 0.2 tog to 3.5 tog.

Basically, the higher the tog rating, the warmer the product.
